Turn Up the Vinyl
I've been a record collector all my life...a whole 24.8 years. Throughout that time, my generation has been bred on the compact disc (CD) and the birth/thrive of the digital music scene. I mean, don't you brag to your buddies about your note-worthy collection of burned music via Limewire? But before all of this, the vinyl LP was a collectible medium that had tons of character. You might ask, "Why listen to crackly, poorly mastered music on an old-fashion record player? Isn't it out-dated?" The answer is NO. People now actualy want to hear those unique imperfections. Think I'm crazy? Read for yourself. Commentary by Momus.

I feel pretty lucky at the moment to be living with someone (Liz, who visited Kecskemet) who owns quite a few LP's and a record player, so I get to listen to it a lot. And, there's still quite a few amazing pieces of music that haven't been transferred onto CD's....for example, Ella Fitzgerald singing "Air Mail Special" (which I found out the hard way when a teacher made me transcribe part of this piece from the LP....trying to find your groove over and over SUCKS!). And, while digital technology theoretically preserves all sound data that is audible to the human ear, I'd rather have the vinyl that doesn't filter anything out...just in case our theories about sound perception aren't as great as we think.
And, by the by, I miss you! I'm so glad I checked your blog....haven't been here in months! I'm still listening to the belated birthday mix...though it's not the same without the palinka, the monastery, and the drunken visitors. :)
